But it is set in an alternate reality, with so many creative ideas and designs, that it really captures the sense of wonder. It is a Real-Time Strategy (or RTS) game, like Age of Empires, or Warcraft. This game has aged extremely well, because not only is it nostalgic, but the mechanics are so simple and effective that it is not that far from a modern game, in terms of its gameplay. Many of the employees quit during the acquisition, so I imagine it must be tough to create a game at all, much less something so memorable, and enjoyable. Red Alert 2 was developed by Westwood Studios soon after they were acquired by EA, however, there is no mention of EA anywhere in the game, and I am utterly grateful for that. Red Alert 2 will celebrate its 15th anniversary in October, and I wanted to take this opportunity to write something about this little piece of history.
